John Hornbeck recently joined Chapman Law Group as a health care attorney at the Sarasota office. John’s primary practice is health law, professional licensing, and health care fraud defense.
Medicine and law run in John’s family. His fiancé is in her final year of medical school and John’s grandfather, William Hornbeck (Harvard ‘45, Harvard Medical ’47), is a physician. John’s father, Bill Hornbeck (Harvard ‘75, Stetson ‘79) is also an attorney. From an early age, John knew he wanted to become an attorney like his father. Now an attorney, John combines is love of the law and deep respect for health professionals and dedicates his practice to the defense of health professionals. John represents health professionals with licensure matters, staff privileges and credentialing, regulatory compliance, HIPAA, Medicare and Medicaid compliance, Stark and anti-kickback, and other health law matters.
John attended Stetson University College of Law; obtaining his Juris Doctorate in two and a half years. John received a Certificate for Excellence in Leadership from Stetson and was co-chair of the school’s Alumni Relations Committee, Christian Legal Society, and Go Green Committee. Prior to attending Stetson College of Law, John attended the University of South Florida on a full scholarship where he was able to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in only three years, while maintaining a job in the academic advising office.
Prior to joining Chapman Law Group, John interned at the Office of the State Attorney in Pinellas County where he wrote the state’s responses to Motions for Ineffective Assistance of Counsel. Judges ruled on the motions to determine if convicted felons would get a new trial. Some of the cases he handled included trafficking cocaine, rape, and murder.
John is native of St. Petersburg, Florida. He was born and raised in St. Pete. He attended Keswick Christian High School in St. Pete, where he was a standout athlete in baseball, soccer, and football. He was named all-conference and set school records. John obtained his Bachelor’s degree from South Florida University in St. Pete, and his Juris Doctorate degree From Stetson College of Law in St. Pete.
John’s commitment to helping people doesn’t stop at his profession. His community service includes City Of St. Petersburg Volunteer of the Year award for his work with the youth in the community. He was the Youth Coordinator at his church for over two years mentoring and teaching children. John also volunteered as a civics teaching assistant at Booker Middle School, teaching 7th graders constitutional issues. In addition, he volunteered his time teaching senior citizens history. John also volunteered multiple years as the kicking coach at Northside Christian under former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ fullback Mike Alstott.
In his free time John enjoys playing golf with his brothers and dad.
